Discover the Native Nations!

80 000 Native people currently live in the province of Quebec. They represent about 1% of the population.
They are the descendants of the first inhabitants who came to North America over the Bering Strait 35 000 years ago.

About 50 000 Natives live in reserves managed by a Band Council consisting of a Chief and advisors.
Some 19 500 live outside of the reserves in a multitude of bigger towns, e.g. La Tuque, Montréal, Trois-Rivières, Chicoutimi, etc.
The majority of the Inuit live in the 14 villages in the far North.

The 10 Native nations and the Inuit differ from each other in history, culture and way of living.
The 10 Native nations belong to two different linguistic and cultural families:
The Abenaki, Algonquin, Atikamekw, Cree, Maliseet, Micmacs, Montagnais and Naskapis belong to the Algonquin culture.
The Hurons-Wendat and the Mohawk belong to the Iroquois family.
